The best evaluators in football history — guys who built dynasty-level rosters — weren't anti-data. But they also weren't data-first. They watched players in person. They talked to coaches. They sat in film rooms and looked for things that didn't show up in any box score: how a guy carries himself after a turnover, whether he's talking to his teammates on the sideline, how he responds to adversity mid-game.
That stuff matters. It's just really hard to put in a cell on a spreadsheet.
The Teams Getting the Balance Right
The franchises that have actually figured this out — the ones consistently making the playoffs and developing talent efficiently — aren't choosing sides between analytics and scouting. They're using data to inform the conversation, not end it.
Think about the structure: analytics tells you which players deserve a closer look based on performance data. Scouts then go watch those players and bring back qualitative intel. Decision-makers synthesize both. Nobody gets a veto just because they have a model.
That's how you avoid drafting a guy who's statistically elite in a spread offense and completely unprepared for NFL complexity. That's how you find the late-round gem who didn't test well at the combine but plays way above his measurables every single Sunday.
The teams that have collapsed into pure analytics worship — the ones where the data department has more influence than the scouting department — have a tell. They're great at avoiding bad contracts. They're terrible at identifying great players before everyone else does.
So What's the Fix?
Honestly? It's not that complicated, even if it's hard to execute organizationally.
Front offices need to stop treating analytics and scouting like competing philosophies. They're not. One is a filter. The other is a lens. You need both to see the full picture.
